A man was pronounced dead after being fatally struck in a motor vehicle crash on Route 9 and John Street.
Misaskim’s services were not needed.
The victim was driving a mobility scooter and reportedly drove straight into oncoming traffic before being struck.
Route 9 will be completely closed to traffic between Central Avenue and James Street for the next few hours for a Traffic Safety Unit investigation.
UPDATE: Statement from Lakewood Police Department:
Just after midnight this morning, Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Rt. 9 and John Street after receiving a call that a pedestrian had been struck by a motor vehicle.
At approximately 12:27 am responding officers learned that 58 year old Frederick Gillette of Lakewood was struck by a 2003 GMC Yukon that was traveling northbound on Rt 9 while trying to cross the street in a motorized wheelchair.
As a result, Mr. Gillette suffered significant traumatic injuries resulting in his death. The driver of the Yukon, a 47 year old Lakewood man, remained on scene and is working with officials. At the time of this release the investigation is ongoing and additional information will be released when available.
