The Lakewood Municipal Utilities Authority, which services water and sewer to the major part of the eastern half of Lakewood Township, was slammed today with a discrimination lawsuit involving two of their employees.
According to the civil complaint filed today in Superior Court in Ocean County, the plaintiff, an African American woman employed by MUA, was “horrified” to learn that her immediate supervisor, a man she worked with for four years, referred to her – what he thought was in private – using a “racial epithet”.
The case is based on a text message the supervisor mistakenly sent to the plaintiff, referring to the plaintiff using the racial epithet.
According to the complaint, MUA has already suspended or fired the supervisor.
The complaint was served against MUA for negligently hiring and failing to properly train and supervise the supervisor.
The plaintiff is seeking punitive damages and legal fees for the emotional distress she received in being referred to with the racial epithet.
