Aug 31, 2021 658 0 0

A young lifeguard, said to be 19 years old, has died after being struck yesterday by an isolated lightning strike on the beach in the South Seaside Park section of Berkeley Township.

A second lifeguard as well as five beachgoers, including a 51-year-old man, 50-year-old woman and 19-year-old man were all injured, according to law enforcement sources. The six people were taken to the hospital for treatment after suffering headaches, dizziness and hearing issues, and are expected to recover.

Governor Phil Murphy spoke to Mayor Carmen Amato and offered the full support and assistance of the state administration during this difficult time.

“Our hearts are with the family and friends of the young lifeguard killed by today’s horrific lightning strike on the beach in Berkeley Township, and we pray for a full recovery for those injured”, stated Gov. Murphy in a statement to the press.

UPDATE: The Berkeley Township Police Department identified the lifeguard as 19-year-old Keith Pinto of Toms River.
