Back in the day when The Rosh Yeshiva R’ Ahron Kotler Zt”l was in Lakewood, there were a few Kollel families that lived here that would eat Lunch and supper in the Yeshiva dining room, while their wives would eat supper with Rebbitzen Rischel Kotler, enabling their husbands to learn for many, many hours without having to spend much money. The Yeshiva was a true Makom Torah where yungerleit would literally learn learn and then learn again. It was pure ‘shivti B’vais Hashem.’
Now, decades later, Lakewood has turned into a luxury town containing high end diners, luxury cuisines, and stunning clothing stores with some even offering payment plans, an indicator that people are extending themselves to keep up with the Shechters and Katz’s.
Of course there are tons of chesed and other incredible organizations. In fact, LNN reported on many incidents where Government officials and local leaders were shocked by the extent of Lakewood’s chessed and may institutions which are about helping one another. A short month ago while campaigning in Lakewood, Governor Murphy expressed his amazement at how many organizations there are in our community all aimed at helping one another.
There is also more Torah being learned today in Lakewood and frankly around the globe than ever before, But the quality is not the same. The pure unadulterated love for Torah with nothing else – is becoming hard to find.
There are many Tesla Yidden giving Shiurim, but we need more Pas B’melech Yidden in Yeshiva apartments. Those people literally keep the world moving.
In the past year I met two people who gave me hope that such people exist.
One such person wants to send his children off to Yeshiva himself. He said ‘We get tremendous Schar for sending our children off to learn, how can I give a driver that Z’chus!.’
Another who also learns in BMG lives in a 3 bedroom apartment with 8 kids. When I asked him if perhaps it’s time to get a job and enable his children to live in a more ‘decent’ house, he flipped at me saying ‘my kids are happier than anyone, we don’t need Sushi, and poppers to be happy. We have true Simcha.’
While this appeared extreme to me, these men were sincere and truly genuine.
Rav Ahron Zt”l would undoubtedly move the real Lakewood out of Lakewood and would perhaps take these two people along.

Dec 11, 2021Letters like these are nice, but what we really need is people with the courage to make the move and make a ‘new Lakewood’!

Dec 11, 2021Bh we have thousands of Yungerliet learning that would fall under the category of Pas BMelech Toichal. One does not have to look to hard to find them
We also have wonderful ballebatim who are Tomchei Torah and give far beyond their contemporaries in other communities Just for historical accuracy Reb Ahron’s Rebbetzin was Chana Perel

Dec 11, 2021I agree 100%! I hate to say this but we have have to be intellectually honest with ourselves and admit that this town for the most part aren’t bnie Torah although they look as such, you can’t consider yourself a Ben Torah while living a life anti-ethical to Torah.
And it’s clearly anti-ethical to Torah to live a life we physical pleasures are our goals and a means onto itself. the Torah way is to use gashmiyus as a means to grow in ruchniyus but ruchniyus has to be the goal!!
I’d think the only way to really go about this is for BMG to gather a group of chashuve families and open together a new community out in the sticks somewhere together with infrastructure Shul’s, Yeshiva’s, Mikvaos kosher grocery etc.

Dec 11, 2021100% true.
Lakewood is not what it used to be. I think we need to come together and move out!!
I don’t think it’s fair after so many years of hard work to build a toradik community, people are coming and ruining it!

Dec 12, 2021The biggest joke is that allot of these guys are not even old time lakewood residents ND yet they come and lecture people to leave lakewood.
R.
Dec 12, 2021All this talk about lakewood being not frum enough is garbage. Hashem wants all yidden regardless of what YOU think r ahron might have done. Stop dreaming about what someone else would have done and go do something nice for your neighbor. Help out another jew. We have enough issues and no it’s not because people aren’t suffering enough to learn torah.. What an ignorant article from a torah perspective. You clearly haven’t learned enough torah to talk on these topics. So now the more of a struggling life you live the holier you are. Get out of here. Get educated and make sure you live in a cardboard box with 8 kids so you can feel holier then thou.

Dec 12, 2021This reminds me of a vort I saw from Rav Steinman Ztzl. He was asked by a gevir if the gevir should only give a smaller amount to yungerleit so they could be mekayem learning Torah mitoch hadchak (as Rav Aron Leib constantly extolled the virtues of those learning mitoch hadchak). Rav Aron Leib answered, “Do you have a stick at home?” Confused, the gevir answered yes. So Rav Aron Leib told him “Maybe also take your sticjk and beat them, so they can be mekayem learning Torah mitoch yisurrim….” Vehameyvin yavin.

Dec 12, 2021I agree 100% . Way too many people only feel good about themselves when they knock down others “he is less yeshivish” he is into too much gashmiyus” ” he doesn’t Learn as much as I do”. How about we focus on the good of everyone like the holy Reb Levi Yitchok of Bartichiv

Dec 12, 2021Hi everyone, let’s all calm down, we’re all yidden, we all ultimately want the same thing, we all have the same goal, when moshiach comes he’ll take us all with open arms.
We all want to overcome any hardships, we all want to help each other.
It’s all good, stop worrying about everyone else, whether it’s their ruchniyas, or their gashmias, we’re all striving towards the same goal.
Dee Eibishter loves us all, and let’s all continue to learn AND help your fellow Yid!

Dec 12, 2021Perhaps the yeshiva should stay exactly where it is & those that want to have a gashmuys life style should leave
Mark stein
Dec 13, 2021Perhaps nobody should leave as this town is not owned by BMG . There were people loving here before BMG came to town and remember this is a free country and we can’t tell anyone where they are allowed to live .

Dec 14, 2021This town is built on their sacrifice.
