Issue: Shidduch Crisis
I will bring up an issue we have all heard, read, and talked about a hundred thousand times. The solution I will present is a simple one in theory but a significant task in action.
Everyone has reasons why we have what we call a “shidduch crisis”, many of which are valid. We write articles, shiurim are said, tons of organizations created, and much more effort is put in. It all helps and has accomplished a lot, but as was written in this series last week, we still have throngs of girls waiting by the phone hearing that silent ring.
We have seen something effective develop in Klal Yisrael over the past decades. Large stadium asifas have a substantial effect. Whether it’s to inspire people to learn Daf Yomi or Adireih Hatorah to strengthen our appreciation of Torah or speak about the internet, smartphones, or even flip phones. We put the massive effort and money needed to rent these gigantic arenas, fill them to the brim, advertise on every street corner, newspaper, magazine, website, and more because we want to strengthen Klal Yisrael in all the matters mentioned above. I have gained tremendously from these events, and I know many others who did and believe they should have been done and every penny spent was worth it.
Solution: Shidduchim Asifa
Now though, I bring up what you know I’ve been building towards. Doesn’t the tremendous pain and suffering these girls, their parents, families, and all others are going through call out for another 20,000+ people saying Shema together?
The first problem is what will be said even if we organize this. For the others, we knew the goal was to inspire people to learn or free themselves from the issues that come from phones. But what’s our solution if we are all together to speak about the famed “shidduch crisis”?
I have my thoughts like anyone else, but I am not writing this to share those ideas because I’m just another girl’s father, like many others. There are though many Rabbanim and Askanim involved in these issues. I imagine meetings between them will come out with concrete problems and how to approach them with Be”H some solution.
Almost everyone feels the pain I do with my wonderful daughter getting older each day; hearing that silent ring, let us try to do what we can and Be”H, we will see some change.
