Four thieves were taken into custody on Tuesday after attempting to sell a stolen vehicle on Facebook Marketplace in Central Jersey. A resident of Monroe contacted the police after agreeing to purchase the vehicle but became suspicious about the seller's intentions.
Police discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen and set up surveillance before the sellers arrived at the buyer's residence. Two men were arrested upon delivering the vehicle. Police then took two others into custody who arrived in a second car, to drive the suspects home after the sale. Detectives at the scene determined the second car to be stolen as well.
All four individuals are under investigation for potential involvement in similar crimes in other New Jersey towns, as well as in New York, Connecticut, and Maryland. They have been charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle and are being held at the Middlesex County jail.
The Monroe police department has declined to release their identities due to the ongoing investigation.
